NEW FOUND GLORY
I would be lying to you if I said that this album didn't kick the crap out of me. You may know NFG from their radio hit "My Friends Over You". What you may not know them from is their days in their local hardcore scene. Guitarist Chad Gilbert was originally in Shai Hulud. So what you basically have is hardcore kids in a pop punk band, something that may remind you of bands like Fall Out Boy and Four Year Strong. But what NFG have done is taken those roots, and released this LP on Bridge 9 (because when you're a platinum selling artist, you can do whatever the hell you want). What we get is one of the most surprising releases of 2008 hands down.
The first 3 tracks are typical NFG, but much faster with drums that let you know something out of the norm is afoot. Then we get a treat to 3 cover songs of bands like Gorilla Biscuits, Shelter, and Lifetime. And when you think that you've just been treated to a fairly decent effort, here comes the roundhouse kick to the temple: 12 tracks from the International Superheroes of Hardcore. This is band just letting their proverbial bulls into the china-shop of our misconceptions. It's good hardcore. It's silly, and not to be taken seriously, but it's good. You see a band that has been playing their pop punk for over 10 years that just finally has to say, "To hell with it."
Now I'm sure that NFG will follow this release with another pop record from Drive-Thru, but for the 12 tracks we're treated to, you really have to hand it to them for blowing your mind.
